This morning when I went to put my garbage in the can, there was a really big one about 5 feet from me. We have plenty of squirrels around, but they usually are in my tree. It finally ran, but I was surprised it let me get so close before it moved. Should I be concerned about it attacking me or my dog? I know they are just looking for food, and I don't mind having them in my tree. Any info out there?

See these stories for a different opinion. Squirrels have a history of being subversive and attempting to take over the planet. We need UNITY in our efforts to irradicate the scourge to humankind.

Squirrels should be wiped off the map. I say we use nukes!

squirrels are an inquisitive animal and once they get used to you, you can fed them from your hand if you have the patience to sit still for long periods. there is a rest area in Oregon that has squirrels that follow people around looking for food and will crawl up in your lap if you feed them. they do not normally act aggressively except with each other, but since there is always a concern about rabies, if one acts aggressive toward you, avoid it or kill it [as a preventative measure to the spread of disease or being bitten only], but normally a squirrel with rabies will act very lethargic and not as a healthy one would.

lucky you, wish we had squirrels here, they are few and far between in central AZ.

Like any wild animal a squirrel will attack if it is cornered and feels threatened. It will try to run away or hide first but will fight if those options are not available.

Just as an aside, my wife used to think squirrels were "cute" and "didn't mind having them" in her tree until one got into the house and was locked in for a day unknowingly. It destroyed the frames of our sliding glass door and several windows trying to escape in less than seven hours! Now she recognizes them as the rodent pests they really are.

The only thing more horrible than an attack squirrel is an attack bunny rabbit.

NO...They are more afraid of you than you ever will be afraid of them. The squirrel you had your "encounter" with was probably used to "humans" and was just not afraid of you and didn't feel you were a threat in any way..Not to worry........You and your dog are safe from attack....

They will only attack you if you are nuts . Just kidding. I wouldn't worry too much . I'm surprized your dog doesn't try to chase it . Sqirrels will never attack you . They will bite if you try to hold them . They are about as viscious as rats .
