a few series i liked were:
the heralds of valdemir (arrows of the queen, arrows flight, arrows fall) by mercedes lackey which is about the girl talia who has a "gift" that she has to learn to control. my fav was the 3rd & last book. by then you know the characters well enough that they are like real people. (kris was my fav, and he complemented talia well).
the 7th tower series (the fall, castle, aenir, above the viel, into battle, the violet kestone) by garth nix was really good too. it was so good that i checked out all 6 books & couldn't put them down till i finished. it's about a boy who must get a powerful sunstone to save his mother who is dying & find his father who has vanished.
i also loved the book the book of mordred by vivian vande velde. it takes place in the time of camalot & king arther. mordred is king arther's son born of incest & the book is 3 stories that go against the general picture of mordred.
any book by vivian vande velde is golden, but i suggest "heir apparent" "now you see it" "dragon's bait" "companions of the night". she writes believable fantasy w/ witty characters & thrilling plots.
happy reading.
