1. Complete and total darkness
2. People in realistic costumes chasing people
3. Creepy Music ~ Not dumb people making ghost sounds.
4. Make the children sign a "Release Form" saying they won't leave the haunted house. (Will for sure scare em)
5. Have something that looks totally fake and phony jump out at the kids.
6. Tell them not to make any sudden movements.
7. Fog
8. Make them think they are hallucinating

Make sure it's something that if you were in it, you'd be scared ! No fake spiders, people in sheets going "OOOOHHH", No decals, Make it like a horror movie

The element of surprise. Surprises always scare people. Scary things look scary but if you see it coming they're not that scary. I'd use a lot of motion sensor decor.
Make it dark. Put scary creatures from the ceiling and on the ground. use a motion sensor to turn on a light just before the person comes toward it so it looks like the creature came out of no where.
You might want to also use some friends. Have some lay in coffins or stand in the corner and pop up out of no where.

For me, it's always the chilling temperature of the place that really makes it spooky so if you can get an air conditioner going to make the house colder than the outside temp, that would be good. Darkness and dust everywhere, creeky noises, doors that open (seemingly) by themselves, some with a body popping out. A sudden waft of breeze that brushes a cobweb against your skin. Severed limbs that look like they are sitting partially in a pool of blood. Screams (not too close so your imagination gets going). Insubstantial ghosts that seem to not notice you and kind of just go on their way. The smell of something meaty rotting.

i went into a haunted house about 2 years ago and i was TERRIFIED [i was 12] here are some of the things that i remember from it....

1.) a guy was holding a chainsaw in the doorway with a white mask but it was dark enough to where you couldn't tell if the blade part was on it or not. he turned it on once in a while...it was pretty cool.
2.) it was completely dark, so you couldn't see
3.) there were strobe lights [to confuse your eyes]
4.) fog machine

Back in the "old days", this is what we did; cooked spaghetti or macaroni coated with oil was "guts", peeled grapes were "eyeballs", oiled and wet leather was "scalp", and pretzel sticks were "bones". You can rig feathers along the hallway at various heights to tickle skin (ankles, arms, faces), dangle things from the ceilings (like balloons covered with spray on Pam or fake cobwebs with ut out scarecrows in the yard. On Fright Night or Halloween, replace them with real people who stand perfectly still until a kid comes along (or an adult). You need the prerequisite sound effects (available on tape or CD), also the sound of growling, snarling dogs scares a lot of folks, creaking boards above their heads (like the ceiling is caving in) and cover some thin foam rubber with rugs to feel like the floor is rotten under their feet. Have a couple of folks in costume walk along behind the guests; big scares. Use your imagination, but don't get too carried away. My daughter was terrified at one haunted house when a Freddy Kruger exhibit sprayed her with water and she thought it was blood; poor kid couldn't talk for a couple of days.

Water on dry ice makes a fog, then make the worm bowl, filled with broken spaghetti and place in the dark so the kids cannot see what is in it, tell them to put their hands in the bowl and have a witch ask them about the worm bowl. Make different themes in different rooms for example a zombie room or a vampire room. Hope that helps. Also if you can find a place that is has been rumored to be really haunted that always helps.

Black plastic sheeting - you can purchase rolls at home depot or the like - to separate "rooms" and create passages.

Pasta & jello & red food coloring make great 'guts'

Black, red, green lighting

old sheets and clothes, stuffed, and with cheapo masks like from target (any kind) can be used to make "cadavers"

Bed sheets for ghosts, painted w/ glow in the dark paint

lots of fake cobwebs

spooky music

and some live folks dressed up to pop out for some good scares.

you got to turn all the lights off,but leave some candels burnng maybe in some corners or something.then you hang like a mummy in a dark area so it looks real....then you turn like a red light on right next to the mummy and have the mummy make a really unwelcome laugh....those are just some suggesitions.....enjoy..
