Yes, houseplants need new soil, and possibly bigger pots every spring. During the cold months, don't water as often so the plants can "rest". But don't let them wilt.

It depends on the plant. If you pull the plant from the container and all you see is roots, it's time to repot. You can usually tell if a plant is rootbound by how fast it is growing. If the plant stops growing it is probably time to repot. When repotting, don't change the pot size drastically, just go up an inch or so larger. It's not good to repot into pots that are much larger than the original.
Happy Gardening.

as the last two posters said, not unless they NEED it.... repotting is a shock toa plant and if it's not necessary, why subject the plant to it?.....
with 'most' houseplants, the fall and winter are rest times, so a little less water and very little or no fertilizer will let them rest best....
just let common sense guide you.... if it started last spring as a six inch sprout and was in a four inch pot, and now it's three ft tall after growing happily all summer, then YES, it needs repotted!!....*smile*...........but do pull it gently from the pot and check to see if the roots are crowded....if so, new pot....
happy gardening!!....

I don't. I have some house plants that have been in the same pot for years. If they get too root bound then it is time to transplant. Fall and winter care is pretty much the same as spring and summer. Water as needed and fertilize here and there. I have many plants in my home, some are close to 30 years old.

I don't repot unless the plant seems too crowded. I do feed once in a while with a fish emulsion blend - like once a month or every 6 weeks.

Do you want them to grow bigger? If you put them in a bigger pot they might grow. My mom always had a ficus in our house. If you put it in a bigger pot you get a bigger tree. She kept it small because she didnt want a full size tree inside!
