In my community (Harlingen, Tx) you can buy wine & beer after 12pm but not whiskey, unless you go to a bar.

New York does much the same thing, cannot purchase alcohol between 2AM and 8am daily. Alcohol purchases before 12:00 noon on Sunday used to be illegal ... but they finally backed off on that.

The reasoning behind this illconceived law was:

If the bar does not open while church is in session ... the church does not have to compete with the bar for attendance.

If we force the bar to close at 2am the day (1st) shift people will go home and sleep before work, and not show up for work drunk.

The problems are:

Only those religons where the day of rest is Sunday do not have to compete with bars for attendance.

Evening (2nd) shift workers and night (3rd) shift workers can not gather at the old watering hole after work like day shifters do.

We should invalidate all of these so called "Blue Laws" at once.

You can't buy alcohol from a store in Connecticut on Sundays and it's incredibly annoying. If you're making a nice Sunday dinner and want a bottle of wine, you'd better remember to buy it Saturday, or else you have to drive over the New York border to get it. Stupid leftover Puritan blue law.

We already do. In Illinois transfat have been outlawed and cigarette smoking is prohibited in almost everyplace except under your bed. Although it hasn't been outlawed completely yet, it has been taxed a huge amount for the simple fact it's not a good thing to do.
Be careful with this trend, pretty soon, people who exercise regularly are going to get tax breaks.

No alcohol on Sunday? Sounds like we have already legislated morality.

i do not think so. that is a personal choice. liquor should be sold anytime. sunday is no longer a special day. michigan holds daily lottery sales on sunday and has drawings. liquor is purchased as well. the only restriction is that you have to wait until noon.
