...can they identify you? Are there security issues when paying by credit card on a wireless connection borrowed from a neighbor? Can they see what sites you've visited? Are they able to read this post?!!!!

Thanks!

They can easily tell you have been there. Using a neighbor's wireless connection without their permission is theft, you can be arrested. If the neighbor is wishes, he can run a packet sniffer and watch everything you send, credit card numbers, sites you visit, and yes, this post.

The router can hold a log of incoming/outgoing traffic. Meaning they can see where you've been pretty much. There is a DHCP client table where they can see who has been given a lease (whose connected to their network), in which they can see the name of YOUR computer and your wireless adapters MAC address. If the person has a packet analyzer (Ethereal, Wireshark), they can read in plain text anythying transmitted over their network. This includes credit card numbers, email usernames and passwords and just about anything else you can think of.

Chances are, if this person does not have ANY encryption on their wireless network, they don't know how to do anything that I just stated. You're probably fine.

Regards,

Brandon

edit: Also, it's possible a person can log into YOUR computer. Being that they have your computer name and you get an IP address, any person connected to the network you're on can try and log in. In a Windows Explorer window, they can type in \\your.ip.address and they will be prompted with a login window of your username and they have to enter a password. Most people don't even put a password on their accounts, or they put a very basic one. As you can see, in SOME cases, this would be pretty easy to bypass. So, if you have any files on your computer that indicate who you are, they can find out who you are. They could also find credit card numbers, phone number and a whole heap of other stuff that could be used against you.

Hi,
you should get your own router, but as long as they know you and you have there permission, they can't see you and can only track you by your MAC address, hope this helps.

Yes, I can, Greg! How can you do this to me?

You owe me for half my ISP bill!

And, don't forget: I KNOW where you live!
