Las Vegas Churches:
THIS MAY COME AS A SURPRISE TO THOSE OF YOU NOT LIVING IN LAS VEGAS , BUT THERE ARE MORE CATHOLIC CHURCHES THAN CASINOS.
NOT SURPRISINGLY, SOME WORSHIPPERS AT SUNDAY SERVICES WILL GIVE CASINO CHIPS RATHER THAN CASH WHEN THE BASKET IS PASSED.
SINCE THEY GET CHIPS FROM MANY DIFFERENT CASINOS, THE CHURCHES HAVE DEVISED A METHOD TO COLLECT THE OFFERINGS.
THE CHURCHES SEND ALL THEIR COLLECTED CHIPS TO A NEARBY FRANCISCAN MONASTERY FOR SORTING AND THEN THE CHIPS ARE TAKEN TO THE CASINOS OF ORIGIN AND CASHED IN.
THIS IS DONE BY THE CHIP MONK !

Not groaning. I have lived in the Las Vegas area for 25 years. But, the announcement from the sanctuary that chips and tokens will be accepted in the collection has been ended because the Feds say they are the only ones allowed to make money and using the chips and tokens as money is illegal. Still, the visitors celebrating Mass at Guardian Angel Cathedral, Saint Joan of Arc (downtown) and the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer continue to put tokens and chip in the collection baskets. So, they are collected and one Franciscan monk does make the rounds of the casinos to redeem them. But, he isn't in a monastery. He's the manager of the gift shop at the Shrine and a first class cook to boot. His name is Brother Andre and he is from Wisconsin. He is also known as the "chip monk".

fiction. When I read that there actually is a "chip monk" by
the name of Andre who cashes in casino chips I was so
amazed, that the cute story is based on reality. Thanks for
sending this so that we also got feedback about it's possible
origin.
