Franz Ferdinand was Austrian and an heir to the Austria-Hungarian throne, and if I remember correctly, he was shot in Sarajevo, Serbia. This caused Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia and was the start of World War I. I don't remember the exact reason he was killed but, there were a lot of tensions in that region at the time.
