I have heard a lot of opinions on what substrate to use, but i have used soil before but it smells, and i heard that those husk bricks that you rinse in water stick to your salamander

Sphagnum moss makes a good substrate as it holds moisture but doesn't stick to the salamander like soil does. Cypress mulch can also be used. Any substrate should be changed regularly as it will hold ammonia from waste products and develop an odor.
