Hawthorne published The Scarlet Letter in 1850. do you know anything about this? did he feel the same way about his contemporaries? can you give me like a short little summary either about him at the time or the story in the book he wrote at the time? or just any ideas..
thanks

The Scarlet Letter is about a young woman who committed adultery with another man so as punishment she was forced to wear a sign with a big red "A" on the front showing the entire community that she was an adulterous and wasn't to be trusted.
Summary of The Scarlet Letter:
Set in Puritan New England (specifically Boston) in the seventeenth century, it tells the story of Hester Prynne, who gives birth after committing adultery, refuses to name the father, and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. Throughout the novel, Hawthorne explores the issues of grace, legalism, and guilt.

I usually don't do this, but my Bills are winning so I am in a good mood. Having said that...do your homework and read the book...it is actually pretty good! The scarlet letter was an "A" for adulteress' she was caught having sex with a married man. The troubling part for me is how she is treated in comparison to the married man; and I am a man! The book sheds some light on the Puritan way of life and the way women were mis-treated back then!

You can get help on Sparknotes below. They give lots of information about the book in the study guide, including the context, which is one of your specific requests. Good luck!

A woman had to wear the letter to show she was an Adultress - a woman of bad reputation, a 'ho' in todays terms.
