Okay folks, I have about 1500 sq ft of tile to lay down and I need to hear some opinions. I already have a tile saw that I used for a portion of one of the bathrooms. The thing about that is the fact that it was very messy and also very tedious. I am now debating on buying a manual tile cutter, you know the ones that you score the tile and then break it. I want to know what you all think. Should I go ahead and buy it to save myself the hassle of the mess, noise, and time it takes to walk outside to cut every tile. Please respond quickly as I am in the process of the project as I write this.

I wouldn't say one is better than the other. But each has it specific purpose. The cutter is quicker, but I use it for straight cuts where baseboards will hide the cut. Wet saw while not as fast, makes a cleaner cut, and makes L-shaped cuts that the snap cutter can't do. You could spend $30-40 for cheap one up to $300 for the big quality ones. It may save you a few hours or running back and forth, so is your time worth that. I don't know. If this only time you think you will need it, maybe you could rent one. Even if buy one, compare it to the price of 1500 sq.ft of tile materials. If you blow some $40, then oh well. It isn't the end of the world.

I have used both. The saw is messy, you are right, but if you are cutting the thicker tiles like for the floor, you really need to use the saw. For cutting the thin tiles like for walls, I love the tile cutter. I used it on the tiles for my bathroom walls and my kitchen counter tops and it's easy and not messy. Just use a good ruler or square to etch the lines, then crack it off on a sharp edge. Sometimes you can get a kit that includes the tool for cracking the tiles. That tool works very well for cracking the tiles in straight lines. You can also get a nibbling tool for cracking off small corners or curves. I used one, it worked very well, for some pieces I used pliers as a nibbler. For my floor tiles I had to use the saw because they were too thick to use the tile cutter. It was messy and I had to wear safety glasses because of the sparks and flying pieces. Good luck! I hope this helps you decide.

Use both! Use the manual on the easy straight cuts and the power saw on the trickier cuts. At least that's how I've been doing it for years. Some tile is very difficult to cut with a manual cutter. If you go manual make sure you buy a quality cutter - don't go cheap!
Good luck

I would stick with the power saw. If you do want a manual cutter, just buy one, don't rent it. I doubt you'll be done with 1500 sq feet of tile cutting in a one day rental.

Rent, instead of buying, a tile cutter. It won't take many cuts before you go back to the saw.

It sounds like you want a manual cutter already, as you are fed up with the tile saw.
I would get the manual cutter; call rental companies and rent one. Then if you like it better, then buy it.
