usually a fixed, direct eye contact would let you know, but when it come to asking you could directly ask the question or indirectly ask him if he likes what he sees.

hmmmm...I'm going way out on a limb here but.....I'm going to say that the best way to "detect" (as you said) someone who is gay would be to......ASK THEM.
