If you add your old drive to your new computer you must configure it with jumpers to be a slave drive, leaving the installed drive as the master. Alternatively, buy a USB enclosure (google for one) so that you can just plug your old drive in as an external drive. Good luck.

Okay there are an awful lot of assumptions. Assuming this is a small company and can not afford an IT person. Depending how old the old computer was, I am also assuming that the hard drive is an IDE PATA type drive. On to the old drive; first look to see if the new computer has the facilities for the wide ribbon type wire for the IDE PATA type of drive. Then set the old drive to be the slave. If it does then plug in the ribbon type wire properly. Serial type of drives can be identified by a much smaller plug. leave the plug alone, do not touch it. Set the jumper setting to master. Then you should be able to access the old drive and use it for storage. Caveat; You may need to buy a PATA controller board. Better yet hire a tech to come in and set it up, should only cost you about $125.00.

If the old hard drive is an IDE, Best Buy has a USB enclosure you can plug it into. It will make a good backup drive that way.
Hopefully you didn't plug it into the computer while it was on.

Try taking it to a computer store , they would most likely be able to access the files on the drive and put them on your new computer.
