I used to use Q-tips. I quit after I found out they were compacting the earwax up against my eardrums and making me have trouble hearing. Now I use the squirt-thing.

I just get a cloth and stick it under the shower head, and use my finger and the wash cloth. I can't stand having q-tips all over the place. It's a pain.
