1)
let a and b be the two numbers:

3(a-b) -1 = 8.3

a-b = 9.3/3
a = 9.3/3 + b
= 9.3/3 + 4

2)
v = d/t

time = distance/velocity
time1 = 60/ 30 = 2 hours
time2 = 60 / 50 = 6/5 hours
total time = ???

3)
total distance = 8 + 6 = 14 mi
times = dist/speed = 14/8 hours

Let "G" represent the greater number to be found.
3(G - 4) - 1 = 8.3
3G - 12 -1 = 8.3
3G = 8.3 + 13 = 21.3
G = 7.1
