peculiarpup, that answer might have been useful had my question been something regarding tracing paper. all i got out of it was "flowers."

This site has lots of embroidery designs and the instructions on the stitches. You may require a hoop for best results, and I don't know how you would be able to do that without un-sewing your bag.

Time to get yourself some tracing paper. The best design is one you like, which depends on what interests you and what you like to look at. If you like flowers, all you need is a seed catalog (beautiful pictures of flowers and free from most seed companies - just search Yahoo! for "seed catalog").

Use art tracing paper (available and inexpensive at office supply or art supply stores) to trace the flowers you like. Art tracing paper is very thin, so you can see through it. You can even design an arrangement you like by putting the layers of tracing paper over each other and moving them around.

When you get the grouping you like, tape the papers together and trace the flowers from the other layer so everything's on one page. Just remember one flower is behind another, so leave off the part where the flower in back intersects with the flower in front.

At any fabric store, you can get sewing tracing paper. This paper is opaque (can't see through it) but has a film on it that comes off onto the bag when you draw on the other side. Tape your design to the wrong (uncoated) side of the sewing tracing paper and pin it to your bag. Now draw over the design. When you pull up all of the paper, you'll see your design on your bag.

This also works with carbon paper instead of sewing tracing paper, but not with a black bag. Sewing tracing paper comes in colors, so you can find one that will show up on your black bag.

Draw lightly so you don't see the traced design when you're done (although it also comes out in the wash if the piece is washable). This will work for anything. You can copy a design from a dress or blouse you have, or even a photograph (scan the photo and print it on plain paper so you don't ruin your photo).
