I work at an insurance company. I hospital usually charges around $3,000. The physician fees, anesthia etc. can run another $2,000.

If you have a plan with a deductible, coinsurances, etc. that will determine your out of pocket expense.

For instance, I have a $250 deductible, but my sister-in-law has a $1,500 deductible and a 10% coinsurance.

So IF you have insurance, be very greatful.

It's hard to give you an average for several reasons.

1. Hospitals vary greatly in their fees
2. Insurance companies vary greatly in what they pay/cover
3. Where you live makes a big difference

I had my second hospital labor and it was around $3000-$4000. Getting the epidural add another several thousand dollars! At the time, my husband was in the Army so it was covered 100%.

I've also given birth with a midwife at a birthing center. The total cost was $2900. Our current insurance pays 50/50 so our out-of-pocket for the last baby was about $1400.

We just basically saved up the $1400 during my 9 months of pregnancy, wrote a check after my daughter was born, and that was that.

I'm pregnant again and going to the birthing center and currently saving the $1400 again.

Hope this helps a little.

There really is no average, because every insurance plan is different. Some cover in-patient hospital stays 100%, others might have a deductable and/or a co-pay. The only way you're going to know is to call your insurance company's customer service line and ask.

With everything you might end up paying your full deductible... Check with your insurance agent.
