The most well-known proteinases from plants are papain from papaya and bromelain from pineapple. They are produced for the self defense of the plants.

Plant cells also have to destroy old structures to recycle materials. They do not have lysosomes, but the breakdown of unwanted structures is inside the vacuoles.
