My parents have a pond in thier back yard with fish, Shebunckins, Coy, and Goldfish, However we are having a problem with a Great Blue Heron...He has found us and our pond. We have put string across the pond to try to keep him out, however he still comes back..Is there anything we can do? Does anyone have any suggestion?? Please!

My parents had the same problem and they just covered it with screens. This helped keep out the heron and the cats. They uncover it when they are in the yard are when they have company. They just lay a couple of screens (2 large door screens) and then set a couple of the rocks on the sides to hold them secure. So far this has worked out quite well. The only problem they have now is their tiny dog likes to walk around on top of the screens and bark at the fish.

Sometimes you can find motion detectors that make noise when set off.. Like a dog barking which might scare them off. I have also seen people put netting over top of the pond so predators can't eat your fish..

Netting

get some bird netting and put several layers over the pond... one layer won't keep them out... they'll just rip a hole in it and stick that long neck in to get at the fish.....

be sure the fish have places to hide, too.... lengths of clay pipe, or large clay pots, or overhanging rocks.... someplace to hide where that danged bird can't see them....

a herron cleaned out my son's pond... with all our named and beloved fish becoming lunch.... we were NOT happy....

you might try a statue of a herron, too... seems they are territorial and may not bother a 'taken' pond.... just keep moving it around to keep fooling them....

trip wires at ground level help....any way to irritate them before they get TO the pond.....rent a big dog for a few weeks....the thing is, once they know there's easy food in your pond, they won't stop coming back until they've had ALL the fish..... you gotta fight for your fishies!!!....

That is sad!!!
But it is the way of nature, isn't it.
I like the idea of the fish netting that the other poster was talking about. I think that is what I would do.
