I've always used Norton Antivirus as it came free when I first bought my computer, but I'm wondering if there are better and cheaper options out there. Anyone with knowledge out there?

AVG Free and Ad-aware are the best and they are free. Go to www.download.com to get them.
I have used these 2 for years with no problems.
Norton is one of the worst anti-virus's you can have.

Linux.... Actually, it's free. Solves the whole issue. And if you, say, need a new system, well, mac, OS X is only $149 for the "ultimate" edition, and the "basic" edition (joke). However, instead of worrying about how to protect you computer, get an OS that doesn't need to be protected, anything other than Windows. Make it dual boot Windows and your other OS, Like Linux (I like Ubuntu). So you can use your system without worry or slowing it down with antivirus and anti spyware, but still game and do other Microsoft only stuff.

I used Norton AV on my Windows Me computer, when I first got it because it came with it; I really liked it - kept all the little 'nasties' out. I use McAfee now, because my ISP, Comcast, provides it as a benefit; I think it's tops, too.

spybot and ad-aware are really good but they are not antivirus protection.
i use avg which is a free antivirus program.
