The debate that seems to be ages old in this section:
"Why are people gay?"

If we had an answer to this question, a positive, proven, 100 percent accurate answer, would it really change anything?

I think it is human nature to be inherently curious, and we, in a secular society, are very reliant on "factual answers."

The answer would matter to everyone, not just straight or gay and I think it's often unfair to jump down the throats of people who legitimately don't have an understanding of the issue and want, without malice, to reach out and enlighten themselves.

As a gay man, I know my sexual orientation has nothing to do with some conscious decision. Just as heterosexuals don't proclaim at 11-13 years of age that they're attracted to the opposite sex. That is just silly, but when first introduce to any topic that is foreign to us -- our initial questions in search of understanding always seem so. Think back to your first encounter with algebra, or calculus. If you don't know anything about the subject matter, it's difficult to articulate your question or point.

It would matter because it wouldn't end the debate, but it would give structure to it; as opposed to pure speculation and general intolerance we still face based on ignorance.

As humans we often dislike, distrust or are intolerant of things we can't relate to, understand or have no experience with. Routine, and staying within our comfort zone, is normal.

In summary, a structured understanding of sexual orientation would educate the masses -- ignorance is not bliss. Moreover, many, if not most of us go through a phase of confusion -- which later is overcome, where self-acceptance and proper development can begin. I think, in a society where homosexuality is not an exception, but just another cog in the machinery, will benefit future homosexuals who won't have to face a society where being gay, today, is still often seen a defining characteristic.

My personality, character, intellect and interests define me. Not my orientation.

I don't think it will change anything, to be frank.
Truth be told, people believe the homosexuals and bisexuals to be different because of their gender preferences, not why they like the gender. I mean, if it's proven that some chemical imbalance in the brain causes homosexuality, then maybe and all those homophobic people would get their homosexual kids the medicine to "fix" them.

1. I think everyone is bisexual deep inside. It all depends on whether or not they want to explore it, accept it, reject it, etc.

2. People's views should changes even if that question is answered because we should be judging in the first place anyway.

No. And I don't think the people who ask that are really wanting an answer, to be honest. It's one of those generic questions people use to try to start things up. Not necessarily a debate, but that's probably usually where it leads...

It might, but still a lot of fundies would disregard it. People would still be prejudice against us.

And if they found out it was genes, then they'd try to find a "cure", if it was proven that it was from nurture, then they'd be even more prejudice and blame the parents, etc.

It will eventually become accepted, I mean, look how much progress we are making--but if it was proven absolutely one way, it probably wouldn't change one thing.

the universal answer for the "why arepeople gay" question? is like finding the answer "who are we" and "why are we here" xD

meaning that if there can't be just one answer to it and even if all the possible answeres to this question would be gathered like in a book or something, it wouldn't change much for us because we're happy as we are, we've known the answer ourselves for ever, while maybe for straight people it might change things.

for straight people who don't have a problem with that, it wouldn't change much I guess.

for straight people who actually don't understand this, maybe it'll make them understand better the matter.
