Is the housing apartment style or townhouse-like? What is the surrounding area like for a family with small children? Also how is the overall atmostphere? Any other info in addition to the asnwers to these questions would be appreciated! Thanks

It's typical military housing -- multiple apartment buildings all close together unless you're a higher ranking officer.
If you have orders to go there, you will be assigned a sponsor who can provide detailed info on availability of base housing and off base housing.
Back in the 80s when I had to decide whether to accompany my spouse or not, there was an 18 month wait to get into base housing and there was very little available off base, all of it very expensive. Americans are slobs and the locals don't want to rent to us.
Really, you can tell when you're getting close to the military base. There's litter along the road.
