to multiply fractions, multiply the numerators (top numbers), then multiply the denominators (bottom numbers).

so:

1/2 * 1/2.
numerators are both 1
denominators are both 2

1 * 1 = 1
2 * 2 = 4

the answer is 1/4. TADA :]

or you could think of it like "half of a half", which is a fourth.

I once worked as a steward on the QE2.

At cocktail parties in the captains cabin, the captain would tap me on the shoulder with his glass and say "Half and Half young man, Half and Half" by which he meant fill the glass with Half Gin, Half Tonic.

Wonder if thats why his nick name was Tiddley Riddley.

As for the maths thats why he was captain and i was a steward.
