There should be shut off valves on the pipes leading in and out of the water heater. turn them to the right to shut off water to tank.
If no valves there find water meter and turn off there.

Turn off the electricity or shut off the gas, whichever is applicable in your case. Then feel the pipes above the heater, one will be hot or warm and the other will be cool. The cool one is the feed to the heater, you may or may not have a shut off valve located on the cold water line. In case you don't then shut off the water supply and the main valve, and call a plumber and tell them that you need a new water heater. This would also be a good time to have a larger heater installed, if you have ever ran out of hot water.

good luck.

The glass liner is probably busted. You will need to replace the Heater with a completely new one. Turn off the water supply valve on the Copper line coming into the TOP of your Water Heater to stop the Water flow........

there should be a shut off valve at the inlet of the tank. Ussually on the top, just look for the 2 water lines at the tank, 1 is for hot out of tank, and 1 is for cold into the tank. If there is more than 1 valve, shut them both off, also shut off gas or power to tank until you get someone to replace it. If the water is comming out the side of the tank from the Temperature and Preassure valve get a bucket and put it under the valve, and pull the handle up and push back down a couple times, sometimes they trickle and wont re-seat them selves properly. If all else fails, find the house main shut off and turn it off. Good Luck.

SHUT OFF THE WATER SUPPLY TO THE TANK! The unit rusted through and is shot. This is a typical problem where the tank has to be replaced. Hot water tanks only last so long before the wear out.
