I don't know much about the SMT series, but I've heard really good things about it. They are difficult to find because there was only a limited release of the games here in the US. (My friend who works at Gamestop just told me this.)

If you like the the art style of Dragon Quest 8, check out Dark Cloud 2. It's an action RPG (not turn based like DQ or FF). It has a similar invention system to DQ, except it involves photography. There are a ton of minigames in DC2, also. DC2 is easily my fave action RPG for the PS2. Here is an IGN review if you'd like to read it (they gave it a 9/10):

Star Ocean - 'Til the End of Time is an interesting RPG with a cool battle system. IGN review (9/10):

Final Fantasy 12 is a great game. The storyline isn't as strong as previous FF games, but the awesome gameplay makes up for it. IGN review (9.5/10):

Final Fantasy X-2 is a direct sequel to FFX. This is not one of the best FF games, but I enjoyed it because I liked FFX so much. Plus, the battle system is really cool. IGN review (9.5/10):

Enjoy!

Shin Megami Tensei has a series of RPGs

Nocturne, Devil Summoner, Persona good luck finding these mind you but all of these games rock.

Also you might like Atelier Iris and if you havent played them before check out the Grandia Series. Grandia 1 is by far the best on PS1.

Oh and to answer why its so hard to find, 1 its an obscure Japanese Title so its more of a niche market over here. Its not as well known as FF so most stores dont stock it quite as much. IE low supply plus high demand of people snapping it up where they can find it. I recommend checking out Persona 3 if you liked Shin Megami Tensei, this is their latest release so you might still be able to find it. I actually found a copy at my local Meijers and they were the last store in town that had any copies which is sad when you consider I checked out all of the Game Stops and other specialty stores first.
