Some people dislike silence; it's embarrassing to them in social situations and a bit frightening when they are alone.
Also, watching a mime requires a certain amount of self-forgetfulness.
Perhaps, mime-watchers are uncomfortable if they cannot quickly figure out the activity the mime is representing.
Finally, some people may not be familiar with mime as an art form. New experiences are often uncomfortable at first.

It is the 'fashionable' thing to do. Mimes seem 'high culture' too, like opera or having a chamber orchestra around.
I've had several cocktail parties where I've hired mimes to keep the atmosphere fun, and people really enjoyed it. They could be loose and free on one or two drinks insteadl of needing six or seven to feel free.

Watching and understanding mimes takes patience and the ability to stop, be still, and PAY ATTENTION. Mimes communicate often with subtle gestures...
I think doing this makes most people very uncomfortable.
It might reflect on people's general attitude toward anyone with a disadvantage...as being mute is a definite disadvantage. Just a guess. I like watching them- it takes a talent to be good at it.

I have only seen mimes on TV, My impression of them was
favorable, Admired their control of silence, which I think would be quite a challenge! If I was one I think I would break out in laughter. SOOOOooooo I think they must have a gifted talent and are very focused on control. I found them entertaining, If annoying in person I guess I would have to walk away, Still they seem playful, so I'd most likely linger awhile, at the same token most likely their manner probably differs from one to another.

I think people dislike mimes because of their silence. Humans are a vocal bunch and are not used to listening to silence while watching someone use body language to express ideas. It makes most people have to think and most people don't like having to think to be entertained.
You might liken it to how uncomforatable people are around people who are deaf and sign to communicate...makes them uncomfortable.
I personally find mimes facinating! They have such control over their facial expressions and movements!

It could be their attire or simply the fact that they just don't talk which annoys people.
Personally i love mimes except when they trap me in boxes. :(

Because people are impatient...and mimes take too long to tell a story...

A good question. I think it's instinctual. Have you noticed how little kids try to kill the clown at birthday parties?
