The S is for Sadism, and in a relationship involving that it would be the one doing the whipping.
the M is masochism, and that would be the one being whipped to put it simply but it could be other forms as well. the sadist would be the one inflicting pain of some sort and the masochist would be the one enjoying it.

Sadism and masochism. "Sadism" refers to the Marquis de Sade, who in the 18th century wrote books full of cruel excesses with female victims. "Masochism" refers to the Austrian nobleman Sacher-Masoch, who around 1900 wrote a novel "Venus in Furs" depicting the physical and psychological domination of a man by a lady (with the man thoroughly enjoying the cruelty and worshipping the lady).
