How can you find what type of metal somehting is. Is there any things too look for, especially between silver

especially between a silver and stainless or silver plate. Is there any sites or books anyone knows about. I have several items I need to clean aand don't know what they are made of some are older.

Silver, both plated and sterling will tarnish. A kind of yellow/brown. Stainless will not. Try "cleaning silver" on line, I am sure you will find several sites that talk about it.
