IMO...firstly, the most important responsibility of an american citizen is to be responsible. By that I mean being a good productive citizen...support one's family or self by doing honest work, pay ones one way.
Secondly, a citizen should be willing to support their country by serving in the military or in their work. This does not mean support the country blindly though.
A citizen should be informed about all issues that face the country and his/her fellow citizens and be involved politically. Our government was set up with a system of checks and balances, it's citizenary is a very viable part of that system. It is up to us to oversee our elected officials to keep them within the constitution that founded the country. This in itself should be one of the primary concerns of any citizen, without a governement that works for the benefit of the citizens, a country is doomed.
The constitutional right to vote and oversee the policies and laws passed not only affects the individual but also the whole country. Too many people shirk this responsibility and leave everything up to the elected officials to the detriment of the population as recent history reflects.
All points are the same answer...a citizen needs be responsible in all areas and not only concentrate on their own lives, jobs and interests.

To live as a model citizen; obey all laws, don't smoke, don't drink, don't do drugs, don't have illicit sex; pay all bills on time, go to work/school on time, to perform duties properly, to vote, to serve the country (in the military, peace corps, etc.), to be responsible for all actions.

Patriotism. love of country and willingness to sacrifice for it.
Being a patriot also mean standing up for what is right, regardless of whether or not that is popular at the moment.
