#15 was Maurice's number when he was a junior, so it was natural that when he joined the Canadiens, he wore #15.

When his daughter Huguette was born, she weighed 9 lbs, and he changed his number in her honour.

My guess is that someone else was wearing number nine during training camp so he was stuck with 15. He kept that number until the person was cut and he was comfortable enough with the coach to ask to switch (he was Anglophone and a bit of a hard-as$, while Richard was French...lots of racial tension and being "in their place" back then).

Oh, and by the way, they were able to just grab another jersey off a coat-rack back then so it wasn't a chore to switch.

He always wore #15 prior to joining the Canadiens

The #9 represented the weight of his first child and he changed in her honour

I think I remember reading that in his youth hockey league, number 4 was already taken, so he just picked 15 and it stuck until his son was born whom weighted 9 pounds.

He wore it prior to joining Les Canadiens, and stuck with it until his daughter Hugette was born (She weighed 9lbs)
