Considering motorcycles are such a cause of death, suffering... I once saw immediately after a motorcycle wreck the mangled body of the driver -

motorcycle proponent = condoning children seeing mangled dead bodies on the roadside

what can we do to stop the rampant horrors of motorcycle use in America?

"Just Say NO!" to motorcycles!

I agree with nearly all of you- but find my same argument, and use as justification for the subsequent illegality of Marijuana utterly absurd, anti-American and outright blasphemous.

Motorcycles are made by man - Cannibis is made by God.

All because William Randolph Hearst wanted to make sure his monopoly on the paper mill industry was not compromised by the hemp industry.

Look it up folks.

And we already ARE living in a 'nanny-state' - sorry for the wake-up call

It's been traumatic for you to see a motorcycle rider's death and I sympathise with that but I'm a motorcycle rider and for sure some of my friends have not reached my age (44) but it's not all due to the motorcycle.
One night on an unlit stretch of road I hit a black german shepherd, didn't even see it till there was no way to avoid it and let the bike go, this is important, when you're relative to the bike then thats as fast as you get dragged, its a machine and keeps going so let it go, crouched and rolled, the ambulance came took me to hospital, no broken bones but quite a bit of gravel rash despite jeans and leathers, the staff mentioned how there seems to be a lot of animals loose on the roads that night when I asked what they were speaking of they said 4 people in a car hit a horse, none survived. Now I doubt I would have survived hitting a horse on a motorcycle either so what should be done...ban horses? Of course not too many people love horses..not me I reckon they are bitey things, anyway I reckon I'll probably get a thumbs down from you for this but I say yes to motorcycles

You have a point about the deaths. The problem is that you have it out of context with reality. The reason for the deaths are the lack of enclosure and protection to motorcycle operators. To put it in perspective like you have. Then lets outlaw small cars, because people in small cars die when the are in a head on collision with a Mac truck. Motorcycles are safe when operated properly. Another problem motorcycles have is their size. Many accidents are caused by car drivers who do not see them. Leave bikes alone and jump on another bandwagon.

I have been driving motorcycles for over 30 years. My total mileage on motorcycles is over 300,000.

I have never had an accident on a motorcycle and I have never even come close to having an accident.

In most cases of an accident involviing a motorcycle, the driver of the motorcycle is at fault.

Motorcycles get much better gas mileage compared with cars.

Considering the gas shortages, we ought to outlaw cars and require that everyone drive motorcycles instead of cars.

Motorcycles are much friendlier to the environment than cars.

Rampant horrors?

And that we should outlaw them so kids don't see the mangled bodies?

Is that what Im trying to get from what you wrote?

On a somewhat related topic, motorcycles get 60-80 mpg. Not to mention the 2 small tires that need to be replaced, instead of big ones. Also, no A/C freon usage.

Yes but more people die on the roads in cars or vans and lorries (that's "trucks" in US English) cause horrible deaths. So if you are in favour of restricting all traffic on roads to just peddle cycles, horses and walking or running yes that sounds like an excellent idea. Everybody will get more exercise and there will be a beneficial improvement in everybody's physical fitness, health and happiness. The problem is the politicians would never allow any such change in the law to go through, because they are too damned lazy to have to walk or cycle to work themselves

In 2002 over 42,000 people died on American highways. Let's ban highways.

Fatalities in rollover crashes involving sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks accounted for 53 percent of the increase in traffic deaths. In 2002, 10,626 people died in rollover crashes, up 4.9 percent from 10,130 in 2001. Let's ban sport utility vehicles.

In 2002, 980 children under 7 were killed on America's highways. Let's ban children under 7 on America's highways.

4776 pedestrians were killed in 2002. Let's ban walking in America.

Why are you so focused on Motorcycles? There are many much more dangerous things to get indignant about. How about drinking and driving? How many senseless deaths are caused by that? Why don't you do some research to find out. Maybe you can have a new crusade that will actually make a difference to more people in your community and mine!

No.

And motorcycle proponents don't want kids to see mangled bodies any more that you do.

A motorcycle is simply a machine, not a cause of
death and suffering. Reckless use of motorcycles by irresponsible motorcycle drivers, and the usual irresponsible behaviour of those driving cars - pickups - SUVs are a cause of death and suffering.

People should have a right to do whatever they want, unless and until they violate someone else's constitutional rights.

If you want to control someone else's life, please just buy a dog.

I think motorcycles are very dangerous, my uncle was killed while riding one, a man in our town was killed last week on one, and the list goes on and on. I dont think that they should be outlawed though, everyone I know was being safe (wearing helmet, ect) when they were killed, but things just happen. The people who I know who were killed, were killed by hitting a dear on it and hitting a truck. Outlawing motorcycles would be like outlawing cars to some people. Just as many people maybe more get killed in car accidents.

Irresponsible motorcyclists generally only kill or injure themselves. Irresponsible jackasses in cars kill thousands of innocent people every year.

I say make it mandatory to learn to drive a 400 lb motorcycle before you can get a license to drive a 4000 lb oldsmobile.

In the process, we'd all be much better drivers, parking would cease to be a problem in any major (temperate) city, fuel efficiency would spike radically, and many people would find their long commute stuck in traffic to just fly by.
