Don't! It will make you think you are dying of every disease known to man! ;-)

Years ago I worked for the state vocational rehabilitation agency and for 'fun' we used to look up symptomology in the Merck manual...again, not a wise thing to do if you don't want think you are terminal!

I was a nurse for 33 years and used to live with the PDR and the Merck Manual among other thrilling tomes. I know that feeling of thinking-"Hey-that's what I have." I've gotten over that and fight going to the doctor unless it's absolutely necessary. I really resent the fact that, now that I'm officially a senior citizen, I am practically ordered to get poked and prodded on a yearly basis. That's all I'll give them. Once a year unless I get run over by a trolley. Luckily, our city doesnt have trolleys.

I do visit this site, along with several others.

I started out my educational life, after High School, in X-Ray School, which taught me that just because you are working with a terminal therapy patient, that doesn't mean that you are. I've never had problems with these websites purveying terminal illness to me or my friends. I guess it's just the way a person perceives what they're reading. If you feel better not visiting this site, then don't do it.

What ever you decide, have a great day!

My Merck is probably the most well worn book I own. Guess I have enough of a medical background to not see it as a terminal death wish but I have lent it out to people who looked up their symptoms and were sold they were dying. I remember I felt the same way when I was learning about mental illnesses......no doubt about....I was insane.....a full fledged fruit-cake...at one time or another I had exibited one or all the symptoms and was ready for the rubber room. LOL

Yes, If I am sick and know what the problem is. I go to WebMD to find out what options i have and what side effects they cause. That way I can have a better discussion with the Dr. Example, I have COPD and was using three inhalers. One was a steroid I was not comfortable with. I went to WebMD and found I could use another inhaler and drop the steroid and one other. So I discussed it with the Dr. and she agreed it would work.

I usually end up at the Mayo clinic site. I tend to look thins up after the diagnosis just for more info than the doctors gave us. I do know what you mean about self diagnosis, though. You can convince yourself of the worst case scenario. You can even convince your doctor you might be right just by the symptoms you do or do not report to her. "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

Went to the support group a couple years ago and had positive results, but this wasn't looking for information, it was just chat sessions for a known problem.(a webmd support site)

Yes, just to look up things like toe fungus or roseola etc. I was just going to go there today. I still am going because I would never take the word of anyone or any site on the internet. Besides, both my daughters are nurses.
