Positive aspects: None that I know of
Negative aspects: Every possible bad thing you can think of

I always avoid online shopping unless I am buying from some very reputed company like Microsoft, Symantec, WalMart etc.

Positive: you can usually get things cheaper than at the store, and there's more variety.

Negative: You have to pay shipping most of the time, and there's a possibility of identity theft by putting sensitive information online. It's addictive.

Make sure it is a secure site before you put personal information on it, and you may want to check out the site's return/exchange policy (in case you don't end up liking what you bought.)

Positives:

You can find items you can't find locally.

Time savings. You can price compare in one hour online more items than you could in a whole day of driving around.

Fuel savings while shopping. A few cents worth of electricity vs many dollars in fuel, plus wear and tear on your car. For fuel savings while BUYING, see Shipping.

Convenience. Sitting down at home vs dealing with traffic, other shoppers, etc.

Price. You can often get better deals on things online over the same thing locally.

No sales tax. When buying online, you may not have to pay sales tax on items bought from sellers who do not have a retail outlet in your state, where you will pay tax if you buy locally (on taxable items).

Shipping. It can be cheaper to pay the shipping charge than pay for the gas to drive to the store and back, and it's far more convenient.

Negatives:

Being cheated. Not getting what you paid for, and not getting anything at all. are very real possibilities, but not very likely when dealing with established, well-known retailers. It's a bigger problem with online auctions and small, 'niche' market websites. But there are ways to lessen the chances of this happening to you. Check a seller's feedback rating within the online auction community, and do a web search for the name of the niche website to see if any buyer complaints appear.

Shipping. Can at times be excessive, and in the case of returning wrong items, damaged goods, or items you aren't satisfied with, you may have to pay the return cost. Find out the seller's return policy in advance of purchasing.

Not being able to actually see and touch the item. For many people, this is important. For some things, buying locally is the better choice.

Delayed gratification. Buy it at the store, it's yours. Buy it online, you have to wait.

I am a collector in a number of different areas. Without online shopping, I would never have had the opportunity to obtain many important things in my collection. I could not have afforded the time off from work nor the expense of travel, lodging and meals away from home to attend the trade shows, live auctions and garage sales (all of which still exist) but would have been my only way of finding them without the internet.

For me, the pros outweigh the cons, I don't have to leave the house, and there is a lot of things you can get online that is not in the stores. Even at walmart.com they carry things online that they don't carry in the stores. Of course on the downside, if something is not what you expected, you can't just run to the store and return it. But most sites do pay the shipping charge on returns and refunds.
