I did have a few problems at first. What I found is they have a process for everything, if you try to go around it you are going to have problems. In general you do things there way not yours. After you get established in there system I believe they are very good and have helped me with my disability far better than I would expect from a regular hospital. The trick is follow there rules.

My father is applying for benefits with my help. Here's what I have learned through allot of veterans I know.
1. Your income cannot exceed 30,000 a year including your spouse.
2.The government claims that they do not have the funds availible for most vets unless on death bed or nursing home condition
3.Even if your medical problem occurred while being active doesn't mean they will help you when your discharged. Example a friend who is a Vietnam vet was treated during active duty and after honorable discharge was turned down after 8 years of psychiatric care and later got the benefits back.
4. You are encourage to apply ever year for example my uncle applied for 15 years before receiving any benefits. My father in law is still trying.
I wish you luck, keep copies of your application so you make copies as you continue to apply it will be easier on you.

I am in the process right now, its slow but you will win if you stick with them and have the evidence. In some cases you will need to go to a Private Doc, this really helps you. Its puts a lot of pressure on the VA to say no. Most of their docs are young and just beginning. They don't like to go against older more experienced doctors. Good Luck.

If you are trying to get benefits based on AS that could be your problem. AS was not caused, but might have worsened because of your military experience.
