can I network a computer with Vista & one with Windows XP?

Yes, there is no problem in doing this you can put both in the same workgroup, or on the domain. Just a reminder though, the Windows Firewall which comes in both xp and vista can hinder productivity, I recommend if you are behind a firewall, to turn them off.

Yes. My main PC, a desktop, uses WinXP. My "toy," a Toshiba laptop, uses Vista. You create a home network and assign both to it.
