All too often people with medical tragedies cannot afford their medical bills. We sometimes see public appeals for money which have been organized for these people.
Of course, not everyone in that situation is able to have such a fundraising event organized for them, so the financial consequences for them are even more serious.
Do you think the frequency with which Americans find themselves in that situation is an indication that our health care system is seriously flawed?

I don't think it's a failure. It could use a little improvement to get people the medical help they need. The FDA is one cause of high medical costs. There are drugs out there that can really help people but they won't approve them. Another cause of high health-care is the increase in the Baby Boomer population. People are living longer and use more insurance. Another cause of high medical costs is over use. With new technology people are REGULARLY getting procedures done that they wouldn't have 20 years ago. This drives the cost of health-care up. I think that ultimately if people would get a little tougher instead of running to the doctor every time their nose was running and the FDA would approve drugs that can cure cancer and stop Alzheimer's health-care would be more affordable.

In large and small ways we see the havoc the lack of insurance has caused. And we see it close up, in the appeals for care for kids who have used up their insurance, or can no longer get insurance.
Too many people still believe that you can get insurance if you are ill or that doctors have to treat you, or hospitals have to take you. I saw one person wanting to know if your child was sick wouldn't you pay anything to have him well, or did you want your cake and eat it too. As if it were some sort of privilege to need medical help so desperately.
That's what we are up against here, the majority of bankruptcies due to medical bills, people afraid to go to the ER, afraid to get tests done because they can't afford to take care of the outcome. Cans at the 7-11 for medical payments.
Is this really the best this country can do?
