Because many people are slow learners.
Do some research on recent trends. That number is changing rapidly - in a positive direction!
BTW, it's NOT 6% if you look at the computers American college students are buying these days. The Apple MacBook has 45% of that market.
And as to the comments of "T" above ... I'm sorry, but there's not a single verifiable fact in anything he said. He obviously knows not what he speaks!

Apple lost a lot of market share in the 1990s, dropping down to an under 2% share in the late 90s from a 20% share in the late 80s, at a time when the overall computer market was growing tremendously. While Apple has turned things around, with better marketing, better ease of use, and very attractive product lines like the iPod and iPhone, the computer market still continues to grow, so increasing its share to 6% of the Us computer market is actually quite an accomplishment.

If you look historically most businesses went with the IBM PC and rather than switching modes they continued through the years. Employees who purchased computers rather than learn two vastly different environments would also buy PC's. This initial momentum has continued to even recently.
HOWEVER with the advent of the Intel based Mac's that can run Windows and better virtualization products this is slowly changing. Plus with the prevalence of the Ipod line this is also helping sales.
Breaking Apples marketshare areas into desktops and portables the Apple laptop line's growth in marketshare is exceptional. However it seems their desktop marketshare is not growing nearly as fast. This seems to me to be due to the high pricing of the desktops in comparison to comparible not Apple computers. Their laptop lines have show to be reliable and powerful albiet a bit more expensive. But in my experience the added cost is worth it.
So while the numbers are low they are GROWING.

Well because despite what all the Mac people like, they really aren't better. Out of all the wonderful things Mac people will tell you about them the only advantages are that they don't get viruses, they are little better in media programs, and they look cooler (to seem people, a matter of opinion really). And as for those advantages, a simple anti-virus software will eliminate one, and the other two advantages are only small.
Now as for the the other advantages, and I can't remember them all, but to quote a few, they are more compatible, they are more stable, they are easier to use, they are faster, they have better quality parts etc. etc., all of those are pretty much marketing hype, and are plainly not true.
Now as for disadvantages, well first off they are actually far LESS compatible with things, especially software. In addition, they are more expensive to begin with and are harder to upgrade.
So to sum up, they are a niche market computer, people who either do things like media related task that the Macs are tailored to, or people who simply hate anything mainstream and always have to go with the underdog. (In this case, they hate Microsoft, or hate Dell, or in the past, hated Intel, etc.). But for mainstream users, a PC is a better choice.

because mac is pretty horrible. the mouse is 1 button which makes reduces function. also, there is the issue of software compatibility. most software is built for windows and pcs, not for mac. mac usually doesnt support alot of stuff. sure, while there are less viruses and spyware, its still not really worth it. mac only has less viruses and spyware because nobody uses it. pcs are more powerful and give a wider range of options and customization as well as your own personal kick.
and about the viruses and spyware thing, people switch over to mac because they're too noob to fix the viruses and spyware themselves. a simple virus scan or deletion of files will result in a virus gone poof. you can even fricken reformat instead of paying a company over $100 to fix their computer. its their fault for not keeping backups and not living in the information age.
