Has anyone noticed this?

They all do the same thing each and every time there up at bat?

Actually Cindy, you've noticed something that very few people do - all of those little quirks are how a player gets himself into his rhythm.

What does this mean?

Well, for instance, every time I step into the box, I take two deep breaths, a third while I bend backwards a bit, wave the bat twice over the plate, and take one last deep breath in through my nose while I position my head towards the pitcher. I do this every single time I come up to the plate.

Doing these things puts a batter (or pitcher) into their rhythm with which they perform their swings/pitches - without this rhythm, we're either swinging at pitches we'd normally lay off of or forget to keep our elbow up while we throw a fastball down-and-away and that pitch becomes a middle-away or "down the chute" meatball. The mechanics of properly hitting/throwing in baseball are so calculated that if you do not calm yourself into your rhythm and keep that mindset you'll look foolish like two kids on a date to the batting cages (yes, I've done this before... don't laugh)... and as any player with pride will tell you, they'd rather ground out to short than strike out any day... but with the proper rhythm to start off their mechanics they could pull a Jeter and bloop any pitch into the shallow outfield for a single.

If you have any more questions, feel free to email me!

Baseball is such an odd sport anyways. Freakish things happen. Most players are superstitious because they want to get in a rhythm of doing the same thing everytime. They want to feel the comfort of knowing they approached it the same way everytime because there's not much else in the game that's comforting. It's mostly just superstition, though.

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing....when the pitcher throws the ball to them, they all try to swing at it. Now that's eccentric if you ask me.

Because you never mess with a winning streak (or a winning technique).

What they do helped get them to where they are -- or at least they THINK it did. Why muck with something like that?
