Does anyone besides me associate a certain flavor or food with nausea? The one flavor that I just can't tolerate is the mint wintergreen. I can't even smell it without feeling extremely sick! But everyone else I know loves it! Eeeeww! lol!

My wintergreen phobia came from my mom making me take Pepto Bismol as a child when I was sick in the tummy. It has a strong wintergreen flavor, now it just turns my stomach!

My friend can't stand the smell of those roasted, cinnamony nuts, the kind they sell at sporting events and concerts, etc. She associates them with when she had morning sickness.

Mine was fresh green beans...

When I was eight years old, I went on a camping trip with the neighbours and their two kids. Our last day of camping, the mother prepared a huge pot of green beans for supper, and I ate a lot of them because I just LOVED green beans. Unfortunately for me, I must have caught a 24 hour flu bug sometime before that meal. The drive home was uncomfortable for me, because my stomach kept on flipping. When I got home, I told my mother that I wasn't feeling well, and she gave me Alka Seltzer to try to settle my stomach...well it made me throw up instead. On and on and on until I was dry heaving. And the ONLY thing to come back up was those green beans. In my childish mind I associated my being so sick, with the taste of those green beans. As a consequence, I COULD NOT stand to eat them at all for the next 20 years.

I am glad that I broke that erroneously applied "hate" of green beans then, because now I am back to just loving the taste of a lightly steamed plate of green beans straight from the garden.

Yes. Smells/odors have a tremendous effect on us. In the brain, sometimes a smell is stored along with memories and sometimes that association can bring on nausea, headaches or even sadness. If I smell meat cooking in the morning, instant "morning sickness". I call it that because it's an association left over from a pregnancy. If I smell a certain perfume, I can smell my long, deceased grandma. It makes 100% sense that the mint upset your stomach because you may have been given a mint to settle your stomach when your were a child so you associate them together.

Not exactly, but I know what you mean. My mother used to drink warm prune juice every morning & that smell would permeate the entire house. ....I was very nauseus when I was pregnant & I made a seafood dish with a white sauce. I couldn't eat that for about 10 years. I also couldn't stand the smells of things I love : coffee, chocolate, bacon, etc.
Let's not stop there. Did you ever get drunk on something & now just the thought of it turns your stomach?

Ginger ale. My parents used to give it to me when I was sick. It doesn't make me sick, just reminds me of being sick.

On the other hand, I can't eat pineapple without gagging. It's not the taste - I love the taste. It's the texture ... slimy and crunchy at the same time. Yuck for some reason.

Yuk! Peppermint, wintergreen, Pine-Sol, licorice, flavored coffee (a waste of good coffee, in my mind), and "Jungle Gardenia" and "Tea Rose" perfumes. Blech!!
Oh, yeah-- I totally agree with the sweaty child odor, too.

The smell of Brussel sprouts cooking, turned my stomach and still does.my grandfather loved them so every time he came to
visit I know my mum would cook them for him.
So I made sure I stayed away from home as long as possible on these ominous days.
Needless to say I also hated the taste.

When I was younger I was home with the flu or something. My mother brought me my favorite candy-licorice. Since then the smell brings back that memory. It was once a favorite and now I can't stand it.

I'm with you on the wintergreen.....maybe it's because it reminds me of Pepto Bismol.

Pepto Bismol just makes me sick thinking about it. It is "chewey" with that grit or whatever in it. That cherry bathroom stuff that they use to cover up smells in public toilets. I have to hold my breath, so it is really FAST if I have to use one. Musk perfumes make me gag and I have to hold my breath for that one.
Burned popcorn is terrible too

Yes, if one can consider tequila a "food". As you may have guessed, I overindulged one time and spent hours praying to the porcelain god.
That was probably close to thirty years ago, and I still can't get within arm's length of the darn stuff :((
