First of all, hard disk space and memory are two different things.
To increase either you need to purchase upgrades.
A larger hard drive will increase storage space for files and programs.
Adding memory (RAM) will increase system performance when it comes to running programs, playing games, video's, music, etc.

First of all Your hard drive is a set size. It may be broken down into smaller partitions but the physical disk is a finite size itself.
You could download or use compression software to compress the information on a disk which would allow you to store more on a disk if need be but that is pretty crazy when you can buy a new hard drive very cheaply right now and have more storage space. I got a 400 GB external Hard disk drive from Staples a couple weeks ago for 50 dollars after rebates.
Now you mentioned having low memory which is a different problem memory is also a physical thing. the only way to increase memory is to purchase compatible memory for your computer and physically add it into your mother board. I would suggest when you upgrade your memory you upgrade it to at least 1 GB of memory if you are going to be running video games on your pc or high end graphics manipulations software.

Physically not. One option is to use a software that would compress the data in your PC. Win XP itself can do so. If you right click on the drive and select the general tab on the properties you will see compress drive to save disk space. This might slow down you PC and make sure to back up your data before doing it and regularly after.

First, if you only have 200mb of free space on your hard drive you are probably very close to or are already seeing virtual memory errors and slow performance.
To free up space. Clean up your drive.
Uninstall apps you don't use.
Delete files you no longer need
Run CCleaner (Google CCleaner, download, install, run it), it will get rid of temp files and clean out cookies, and such.
Other than that get a bigger hard drive.
Good Luck

yeah,
you can try to make the drive a compressed drive, but doing so will increase the amount of informatio you can store, but also slow down the way you can access that information.
while there are many tools out there that you can probably download, none of them really work that well, and so the best thing to do, is just pretty much upgrade your hardware.

Harddrive is a physical space. Think of records, with magnetic information stored on them. Ram memory is the physical memory,('sticks'), installed on your motherboard. May I suggest going to Howstuffworks.com, and click on Computer Channel.
