There are very few programs leading to the RN credential online and these expect that you are already certified/trained in some area of health care and have access to a health care facility for your learning experiences.

How do I get started: You find the college you want to attend and apply to attend. Then they either accept you or not. Then you register for classes and pay your bill. Then you take the classes.

What do I need to do: You need to decide what college you want to attend and what field you want to study first. Then you talk to their admissions folks.

Can I still get a grant?: sometimes - it depends on the school and your need. If you are going to want financial aid, you need to complete a FAFSA online. It's too late for this school year, you'd be completing for next school year with this year's tax information.

Can I still get some health insurance....: you'd have to be a little more clear hear. Being in college in the US doesn't usually get you health insurance unless you buy it.

more information: it would appear to me that you don't understand the process at all. You need a much better understanding of how the education system works if you want to be successful in meeting your goals. This can be a very costly proposition and making a mistake could cost you 10s of thousands of dollars. If you need your hand held, online education is not for you.

Advantages:
* convenience: you can do your classwork anytime, anywhere.
* opportunity: you can go to school at some very good colleges from anywhere in the world without leaving home or job.

Disadvantages:
* Difficulty: online courses from a good school are much more difficult than the same course in the classroom at that school. There's a lot of reading and writing to do. This is not the easy way to get a degree no matter what anyone tries to tell you. Most people fail out unless they are very well prepared for the challenge.
* Time management: It's very easy to procrastinate and fall behind. Getting behind can result in low grades and these grades go on your transcript just like classes in the classroom.
* Cost: online programs tend to be more expensive than equivalent programs in your home area.
* Acceptability: If you pick the wrong college (one with a bad reputation) then you get a degree that has little value in the market. You must pick a reputable college with a strong program or you are wasting time and money.

For nursing: the biggest disadvantage is that you still need to do clinical work and you can't do that at home. You have to have access to a health care facility to do your work in.

I do a home study course with a college.

All I did to get started was to type in the search 'home study courses' and then searched each site to find the course I wanted. Then I applied and got my work - it's that simple!

The advantages with the college that I'm with is I can do the work in my own time - the only part that is timed is the exam - which also comes via post. Also you decide when you do the work (which can also be a disadvantage if your not motivated to do it)
The disadvantages are that work can take time to get from A to B because of posting everything. Also you have nobody apart from yourself to make sure you do the work, so if your course does have a time limit you could get behind.

I don't know about grants. Sorry.

I doubt you can get health insurance -but you'll have to find that out - it might be different because of what you are doing.

hope this helps
Good luck

I am a current online graduate student. To become a registered nurse, you may be able to take some courses online, but I doubt the entire program can be completed online, since nurses normally have to do an internship or a practicum, not to mention clinicals in person. You can try your local community college or other colleges in your state that offer online courses.

You will need access to the internet and a computer. The advantages of online learning is the flexibility of attending courses in your home and completing work when you have the chance. The disadvantages are that you have to stay motivated and make yourself complete work at home.

You can still receive financial aid while attending college online and as for health insurance, if you are asking about college sponsored health insurace you need to talk to your adcademic advisor about that, but if you are talking about employer insurance, then that has nothing to do with attending college online.

Some things you want to remember when selecting a college online, is make sure its regionally accredited and it is within your budget and that they do offer federal financial aid.

Some places to start are:

www.elearners.com
www.classesusa.com
www.geteducated.com

I would also start at the local community college, since you want to become a nurse.

Going to school can be a very stressful process but u just have to keep focused and determined. First you should research the major or field u want to study and then look for schools that offer that major. Google or yahoo could help u search that. Maybe u want a community college or a 4 year or even a vocational school? Doing this homework beforehand can help u make up ur mind as to what is going to be the best choice for u.

Then on the school websites it will tell u how to apply, what they need to complete ur application, etc. U can always call a school advisor to help u if u are unsure.

The advantages to going back to school are that u are furthering ur education and giving urself a competitive edge in the workforce. If u have a degree/certification in something that looks good on ur resume and makes u qualified for job openings in that field.

I dont know if u will qualify for a grant because there are certain guidelines. If u go to fafsa.gov or petersons.com they can direct u as to how to apply for financial aid.

And as far as health insurance, yes many school require u to have health insurance so they offer packages to their students.

good luck!
