I am setting up my saltwater tank and I am using a brand new Instant Ocean hydrometer. I mixed my saltwater yesterday and it has been circulating and aerated for 24 hours. However, when I use the hydrometer to test the S.G., it gives me way different readings every time. I am rinsing it before use and setting it on a level surface. Am I doing something wrong??

That's pretty typical of the new designs. I try to take at least three readings in "calmer" areas of the tnk (to make sure there aren't tiny air bubbles from the skimmer (if you use one), tap it a few times on the rim of the tank to dislodge any air bubbles that may be sticking to the needle, then take an average of the readings unless one seems to be far off from the others.

It's worth it to invest in a glass floating hydrometer (http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/11320/product.web )as these tend to be more accurate, although they're easier to break. You'll need to turn off all equipment that circulates water or use a separate container to take readings (to keep it from bobbing around in the water which makes it harder to read). Keep the Instant Ocean hydrometer for a backup.
