You cannot mark a date on the calendar when you are estimating life expectancy. I'm so sorry about your mom. I hope your mom's doctor also added that no one can be sure about those kinds of things. I have heard of many people who were given an estimate like that, and lived for years longer. I hope your mom is one of them. My thoughts are with you. Best of luck to you and your mom.

Ok it would depend on what was wrong with her. and when doctors say that they mean 2 years give or take not right on the dot. I am sorry for your mom and you , it really sucks to know you have a death sentence.

But, my sister was given 6 weeks to live and she ended up living 8 years. Of course that was with some treatment. But she fought the good fight. Its hard to lose somebody you love and watch them die and know that they are going to . But the best thing you can do is spend time with her and let her know you love her and try and not talk about it too much and have good times.

No, a doctor can not predict that.

My mother had stage 4 lung cancer. She started filling up with fluid. Went to the hospital , they put in a chest tube, she came down with staff infection. Three weeks in the hospital in a non responsive state.

They gave her 48 hours to live and sent her home to die.

Two days after she was brought to my home, she "woke up." I had another three months with her.

My point is that there is no way a doctor can accurately predict the time you have left, they can only give an educated guess.

The doctor is only making a guess based on his experience with other patients. Often they are wrong. Sometimes people make a recovery and live a long and normal life.

Instead of worrying about an arbitrary deadline you should be spending your time with your mother enjoying the life she has and building memories. Regardless of what the doctor says, someday she won't be there.

did you see an expiration date on her foot or body some palce? neither did the doc. he's taking an educated guess. most cancers grow at about the same rate (i'm guessing it is cancer since you didn't say). the problem is that some people have better luck with meds and treatments than other people. and it doesn't take into account the chance for moments of non-growth. i never tell patients how long i think they hav eleft because it tends to kill the idea that there is hope for a cure or successful treatment. i had a patient with stage 4 lung cancer who wanted to know how long she had to live. i told her only God knew that answer because he had failed to produce expiration dates on our bodies so there was no way for me to know. miracles shappen. and because of that she refused to give up. it's been 5 yrs and she's cancer free for now. and that's 4 yrs longer than i would have told her if i had been forced to give a time line. can you imagine what would've happened if i had told her that? her son is 7 yrs old now and they'd ahve missed out on alot of time if i'd told her and she'd given up.

not trying to be mean...but no doctors can't tell you how long you have to live...they tell some people 6 months and they live 6 years they tell some 3 years and they only live 2 months...it all depends on the disease the prognosis and the treatment...if your mom seems to be doing fine...i wouldn't worry about it...I believe they tell you a time limit so you can say your goodbyes and everything...so you are prepared. But no one is prepared for death. I would go on living your life with your mom and hope for the best.

There is something do with her health conditions. It could be very serious cancer in her body. That could happen. I'm not saying if Doctor wrong. Best thing for you to talk her doctor to find out what is wrong with her? You will get some answer from her doctor.

Let me tell you; Doctor is not God, only God know when time is up. We're all our prayer for them.

Just because he gives her a two year life expectancy, does not mean that she will die Jan 2008.

I've heard and read about a lot of people whose doctor said they would die in six months, and they were still alive YEARS later.

How is your mom feeling? Has she been receiving treatment for her condition? Has she asked the doctor if her health has improved at all? It's hard to say since we don't know the details, but it sounds as if your mother and her doctor need to discuss her prognosis in detail. Maybe you could ask her if it would be okay to be with her when she speaks to her doc.

Doctors are not God, only God knows when your time is up. They can guesstimate how long a person will live, but alot of times they are wrong.

Doctors gave my father 6 months to live after he had his 5th heart attack he lived over 2 more years.
