I have a couple of suggestions:

1. Do a "repair" installation of Windows. Here's how:

REPAIRING OR REINSTALLING WINDOWS XP

Turn your PC on and insert the Windows XP disk into the CD/DVD drive.

Reboot/restart the PC. This will cause the PC to boot from the XP disk and not the hard drive..

Allow the PC to run the boot up sequence. It will stop at a “black and white” screen and there will be an option to select a “repair” installation or a “full” installation.

NOTE:

If you simply want to repair/fix any and all corrupted and/or problem XP files select the “repair” option. This will only rewrite the XP files and will not affect any of your personal files or software on your PC.

If you want to Format the hard drive and rebuild it completely select the “full” installation option. Be aware that with this option you will “erase” all the files and software on that hard drive.

Select either the “repair” or “full” installation option and simply let the software run. Follow any onscreen prompts that may appear, especially during the “full” installation.

2. Go to http://www.download.com and search on/for defragmentation software. There are FREE ones there but I'd recommend Diskeeper. It's $29.95 but is a great program. It is FAST, it keeps your PC defragged all the time on it's own, it runs in the background and if it's running and you start using the PC it will take a back seat and let you have the processor, and will continue when you pause and/or when you're done. Great program and I recommend it highly. I haven't used the Microsoft defrag utility in about a year and a half.

Those are my thoughts. Hope it helps.

Download another defragmenter. I think your windows defragmenter is corrupt or infected with virus. Use the following link.

It is rated good. Enjoy

Restart just at boot up press and hold F8 opt for (Last known good configuration Enter ) Download and run Ccleaner its free it is a very good registry cleaner it will not delete any of your files or folders but it will get rid of all trash files, and get your registry back to it's defaults, that is to say as good as new. Have a look at the links below re troubleshooting. Cheers.
