I noticed the boot on my lower ball joint is ripped 1999 silverado 4x4 The ball joint itself is still good how long till I have to replace the ball joint and about how much will it cost?

You can replace the boot and put some grease in there and save it from further damage and a more expensive headache later.

Chevrolet lower ball joint seals are non-replaceable. For the time being just keep it greased faithfully every time you change the oil in the crankcase.
They are easy to replace by removing the snap ring and pressing them out with a pitman arm puller available at any Auto Zone for $15.00 or as a free rental tool with a credit card. A top quality Moog or TRW replacement costs around $70.00 at autopartswarehouse.com. You duck the sales tax and there's no shipping cost an anything over $50.00. In a pinch, Carquest has Moog parts and Advance Auto has TRW products. Both Moog and TRW are as good or better quality as GM parts. Not sure what Chevrolet would charge.

i agree with texasm you can get replacement boot at NAPA or any other good parts supplier. how ever you still need to seperate the ball joint from the control arm to install the boot but still cheaper than replacing the whole joint
