I was always told that if it came off the butterfly couldn't fly. is that true?

It is the colored scales that go over the transparent membranes of the wings. It is what gives the butterflies their bright coloring. It is not poisonous and it is not essential for flight.

I think it's a protective coating/grooming aid kind of like the powder that cockatoos have on their wings

i think it is poison or something and it it not true that it could not fly if it ever came off
