I do not believe listening in your sleep will help - otherwise you would be able to kip during lessons and so on!

However, the good thing about the dictation machine is that you can take it home, listen to the lecture/lesson again and improve the notes you made at the time! Then, if there is something you did not understand, you can go back to the lecturer/teacher and ask for help! You can also listen to the tape again and again, to refresh your memory! However, you cannot do this with all your tapes just before exams, so you need to work out why you cannot 'read and take it in' - are you sure you just THINK you can't! What about your favourite hobby - do you remember things you read about your team/group/whatever? If you were going out next Saturday night, how would you remember where you were going? If you can remember stuff like that, your memory is not as bad as you make out! You just need to work out a method that works for you! It may well be that re-listening to the lecture while going over the notes and improving them will help you!
