How to improve the efficiency of an ac generator?

They're pretty efficient already. But if you keep the current demand relatively low (say around 70% of the generators maximum capacity) it will keep thermal losses down. And, of curse, keep the bearings well lubricated to hold down mechanical losses.

Reduce winding resistance.
