The first pregnancy I waited until around 20 weeks or so, because I wasn't showing due to a lot of sickness.
With my second child I started around 12 weeks with yoga pants and dresses.
From then on I pretty much just have my maternity clothes in my normal clothing routine. Post partum, breastfeeding, pregnancy- I'm chubby and those clothes are comfy. I only buy low rise, small banded pants so at least I'm not wearing giant belly panels.

With my daughter I began in the first month once I felt the slightest bit of tightness. As I got really big with her, So the first thing I actually bought was an outfit that was the next size up from my actual size. So If I didnt lose very much weight imeediately after I had her then I'd have some normal outfits to wear till I could.
With my son I didnt get very big. By the time I had him I still only looked like I was only about 5 months pregnant. So I didnt have to buy too many However I did wear more dresses with both as long as I could, While it was warmer. I only had a few pairs of maternity pants with both, As I didnt want to keep them afterwards. I also got low comfortable slide on shoes and slippers, that were at leat a half size bigger than what I normally wear. As my feet would swell up a lot with both.
One of my favorite things to wear around home , was my loose fitting pajamas, and soft fluffy robe. As they were both long and loose.
Find a pattern of material that feel and looks comfortable and calming or soothing to the eye as that helps in how you view the changes in size. I also bought a few loose fitting bras, not just the maternity bras, as they were often too uncomfortable for me to leave on for long periods of times.
So depending on how quick you're growing and beginning to show. I'd just go with getting a few things just a size up from what you are now, to have for afterwards. and unless you show quickly, I'd wait till about the 4th month mark. ( As that is when I bought my first pair of maternity pants , but didnt need to use them right away)
These are some questions that people ask and maybe you can get a good answer or view of when you should begin as we are all different

I have't bought any yet but one thing I am going to buy for certain is a Bella Band. It make it so you can keep your regular pants unbuttoned, put the bella band over it, and wear your normal clothes loger...then once you do have to buy maternity clothing you can use the bella band to extend the use of all maternity pants well after giving birth while your body returns to normal.
As for shirts I've been told to nix the maternity ones and just buy larger shirts. I'm 7 weeks now and will probably start buying once I cant wear my shirts anymore.

I did not get 'maternity' jeans until I was about 4-5 months along.
I can't wait to get PG again so I can have all the cute maternity clothes that are out there!

I couldnt wear my normal jeans after about 10 weeks, they were just too uncomfortable. But I had skirts and capris that were elastic waisted.
I dont think I bought actual maternity clothes until about 15-16 weeks.

My yoga wear and pyjamas are still fitting well and I am 14 weeks. But about two weeks ago I noticed that I couldn't do up the button on most of my pants...that was my cue to head out! I just got some basics...a pair of jeans, a pair of cords and a dressier pair of black pants with about 6 or seven tops that I could mix n' match with all of them! Plus I am lucky enough to have sister who recently gave birth and offered me all of her stuff. My best advice would be to get clothes when you are comfortable...just don't buy everything at once! Another three months from now it might be exciting to add a new shirt to spruce up your wardrobe! Good luck!

I bought mine a week or two ago, I'm at 14 weeks right now, this is my third pregnancy.
Who cares if you aren't "big" enough for them yet, if your clothes are feeling tight you need to not restrict yourself. You coudl start by buying a big jeans size for now (which will come in handy after baby and before you get back into shape)
Do what makes you feel comfortable!

I started when everything got tight.
I currently own 2 pairs of maternity jeans, 1 pair of maternity leggings and 2 maternity tops. I just bought bigger sizes in everything else.

I have never bought mat clothing. Im 26 weeks and i refuse to buy it. I think the fashion sense is horrible. All I bought were 2 dress pants for work to be comfortable in. Instead I buy baby tops and dresses from department stores that are just a bit loose fitting. theyre prettier and seem to fit better. Luckily for us preggos baby tops and dresses are in and we can wear them out nicely.
