Yes, mosquitoes can live in a house but not for very long without some sort of standing water somewhere (in the basement or in a forgotten kid's toy or in a rarely-used drain, etc.) They often come in with an animal or with a person.
Mosquitoes need the water to breed and their lifespans are not particularly long.
If your friend has more than one or two mosquitoes, he should do some investigating.

They sure can. With a food source which would be your friend and a water source which could be in the bathroom or kitchen, they can live their entire life span indoors.
